The Book
Teaching in Inclusive School Environments aims to provide pre-service as well as new in-service teachers with knowledge and skills that will help them understand inclusive classrooms. As well as laying the foundations for differentiating in inclusive settings, this book aims to stand apart from other available textbooks in that it offers practical strategies aimed at helping teachers understand the individual needs of students with disabilities. An innovative feature of this book is the attempt to provide case studies and strategies relevant to both primary school and high school teachers. The strategies presented are based on ‘best practice’ in special education and the personal teaching experience of the authors.

The book has also been designed to support undergraduate students in their mandatory courses. At the end of each chapter are activities that are suitable for university tutorials and/or personal reflection and more extensive enquiry.

The Authors
Stuart Woodcock (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer in Special Education and Educational Psychology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Wollongong. Stuart initially trained as a teacher in England. Since then he has taught in England, Canada and Australia in primary and secondary schools, teaching in a variety of settings including mainstream, special education and behaviour units. He currently lectures in a range of areas, including inclusive education, classroom and behaviour management, educational psychology, and child and adolescent development, teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His research areas focus on teacher self-efficacy, motivation, students with learning disabilities, inclusive education, and behaviour management.

Roselyn Dixon (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer in Special Education in the Faculty of Education at the University of Wollongong. She has taught in mainstream and special education settings in Australia and New Zealand in both primary school and high school support units and Special Schools. She has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses at special education in University of Western Sydney, University of Sydney and University of Wollongong. She is undergraduate and postgraduate coordinator of Special Education at the University of Wollongong. Her research interests focus on inclusive education, social skills interventions with students with special needs, behaviour management and interventions with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Kathleen Tanner (PhD) is a Lecturer in Special Education in the Faculty of Education at the University of Wollongong She has taught in both undergraduate and postgraduate special education programs specialising in the area of reading and other literacy difficulties. She also developed a nationally accredited TAFE Certificate course for adults with dyslexia. Whilst she has extensive teaching experience across a range of special education settings in Queensland, Tasmania, Western Australia and NSW, working from early childhood through to adults with specific disabilities in tertiary settings, she also brings personal experience of the disability sector to her teaching. Currently she is coordinating and teaching into the postgraduate Master of Special Education retraining programme for DEC special education teachers in NSW. Her research interests focus on inclusive education and changing attitudes to disability, technology and ASD, and educational experiences of students with dyslexia. Her dream job is to become a one-legged lion tamer!
